What to Expect From Your First House Cleaning in St. Petersburg

Booking a cleaning company for the first time feels a little strange. You’re inviting people you’ve never met into your home, you’re not quite sure what “clean” will mean to them, and you’re wondering whether you’re supposed to tidy up before they arrive.

Here’s what a first cleaning actually looks like, step by step, so there are no surprises, whether you’re in a downtown St. Pete condo, a family home in Seminole, or a ranch house in Largo.

Step 1: The quote

A good cleaning company should tell you roughly what you’ll pay before anyone sets foot in your home. Price is usually based on the size of the home (bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage), the type of cleaning, and how often you want service.

At Tampa Bay Home Services, you can see pricing in a few minutes, or call us if you’d rather talk it through. Be honest about the condition of the home. If it’s been a while, say so. That’s not a judgment; it just helps the team plan enough time to do the job right.

Step 2: Choosing the right type of cleaning

Most first-time clients are surprised to learn that their first visit is usually a deep clean, even if they want regular service afterward. A regular cleaning keeps a home clean. A deep cleaning gets it there in the first place: baseboards, ceiling fans, cabinet fronts, built-up soap scum, the inside of the microwave. Once that reset is done, regular visits can maintain it in much less time.

Step 3: Before the team arrives

Clutter slows down the cleaning process. A little picking-up helps the team spend their time cleaning instead of moving things:

  • Clear counters, tables, and floors of clutter, mail, toys, and laundry where you can
  • Put away valuables, cash, and anything fragile or sentimental you’d rather not have handled
  • Secure pets, or let us know about them ahead of time. Plenty of our clients have dogs and cats, and we just need to know
  • Make a short list of priorities: the shower that’s bothering you, the room guests will use, anything to skip
  • Let us know how the team will get in if you won’t be home. There will be a travel charge if the cleaners can’t get in

Tampa Bay Home Services does offer maid services that can include tidying up. But that needs to be discussed after the first cleaning to determine the scope.

Step 4: The cleaning

On the day of your appointment, a trained team arrives in the window you booked. They bring their own supplies and equipment. If you’re home, they’ll do a quick walkthrough with you first so they understand your priorities.

A typical first visit works top to bottom and room by room: dusting high surfaces and fans first, then counters, fixtures, appliances, and floors last. Kitchens and bathrooms take the most time. How long it takes depends on the size and condition of the home. A first deep clean usually takes noticeably longer than the regular visits that follow.

You’re welcome to stay, work from home, or head out for the day. Most clients do some of each.

Step 5: The walkthrough and follow-up

When the team finishes, take a look around while it’s fresh. If something was missed or isn’t what you expected, say so right away so they can fix it while there. Good companies want that feedback, especially on a first visit, because it tells them how you like your home cleaned.

If you’re setting up regular service, this is a good time to choose a schedule. Weekly and biweekly visits keep a home consistently clean. Monthly works for smaller homes or lighter-use households.

Questions worth asking before you book

Since you’ll be handing someone your keys, ask any cleaning company these before your first appointment:

  • Are the cleaners employees or independent contractors?
  • Are they background-checked, bonded, and insured, and can you show me proof?
  • What happens if something gets damaged?

Our answers are public. Every Tampa Bay Home Services cleaner is a background-checked, bonded W-2 employee, trained and backed by third-party certifications, and our insurance and bonding details are posted on our Proof of Coverage page. You can read more on our Why Us page.
