Around here, the holidays don’t come with snow. They come with company. Family flies into PIE or TPA, friends who “always wanted to see the Gulf” finally book the trip, and the guest room that’s been holding boxes since July suddenly needs to be a guest room again.
The mistake most hosts make is trying to clean everything in the two days before people arrive, on top of grocery runs and cooking. Spread it over two weeks and it’s manageable. Here’s the timeline we’d give a friend hosting in South Pasadena, Kenneth City, Gulfport, or anywhere in between.
Two weeks out: declutter and decide
Nothing gets cleaned this week. You’re clearing the way so the cleaning actually goes fast later.
- Clear the guest room. Move the boxes, the exercise bike, the laundry pile. A room can’t be cleaned until it’s empty enough to see the floor.
- Walk the house like a guest. Front door, entry, guest bath, kitchen, living room. Note what bothers you: the stained grout, the dusty fan, the porch that hasn’t been swept since September.
- Decide what you’re handing off. Be honest about what you’ll actually get to. If you want a professional deep clean before guests arrive, book it now. The last two weeks before Thanksgiving and Christmas are the busiest of the year for every cleaning company in Pinellas County, and schedules fill.
Ten days out: the deep work
This is the time for the jobs that take a while and don’t get undone by daily life.
- Wash bedding, mattress protectors, and the spare blankets that have been in a closet since last year
- Clean out the guest room closet and clear a few hangers and an empty drawer
- Dust ceiling fans, blinds, and high shelves. Do it before the floors, since it all lands there
- Clean inside the oven if you’ll be cooking a holiday meal (self-clean cycles smoke, so don’t do it the day before)
- Wash windows and slider doors facing the lanai or pool, where guests will spend their time
- Wipe down patio furniture and sweep the lanai. Pollen and oak leaves pile up fast in fall
One week out: the kitchen
Your kitchen is about to work harder than it has all year.
- Empty the fridge of anything expired and wipe the shelves to make room for holiday food
- Clean the microwave, stovetop, and range hood filter (soak it in hot water and dish soap)
- Wipe cabinet fronts and handles, which collect more grease than people realize
- Run the dishwasher’s cleaning cycle and clear the filter
- Check that you have enough serving dishes, and wash the ones that haven’t been used since last year
Three days out: bathrooms and floors
- Scrub showers, tubs, toilets, and sinks in every bathroom guests will use
- Stock the guest bath: fresh towels, extra toilet paper where it’s easy to find, a new bar of soap, a nightlight
- Vacuum and mop every floor, including under the beds and furniture you moved
- Clean mirrors and glass shower doors last so they stay spot-free
The day before: the 30-minute reset
If the last two weeks went to plan, the day before should be light:
- Make the guest bed and turn down the sheets
- Wipe the kitchen counters and empty every trash can in the house
- Do a quick vacuum of the entry and living room
- Set out a basket of beach towels by the door if anyone’s headed to Pass-a-Grille or Treasure Island
After they leave
Nobody plans for this part, and it’s the one people dread most. Strip the beds, start the laundry, and take out the trash the day guests leave. Then give yourself permission to call in help. A post-holiday reset is one of the most common one-time cleanings we book in January.
What to hand off
If you only outsource one part of this timeline, make it the deep work from ten days out and the bathrooms and floors from three days out. Those are the jobs that take the most time and that guests notice most. It also frees you up to do the things only you can do: the cooking, the planning, and actually enjoying the people who came to see you.
